A New World Record for Data Transmission Speed

AI, 5G, IoT, and many other applications are demanding more and more bandwidth, year after year, presenting significant challenges. Recently, co-innovators Nokia and Keysight teamed up to push the boundaries of engineering and set a new data transmission speed record, paving the way for faster, better data connection networks to handle the ever-increasing amount of traffic on networks. The formal test results were presented at the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC) 2022 in Basel, Switzerland.

 

With the help of Keysight’s new 256 GSa/s arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) (M8199B), R&D teams can create and test transmission systems that operate with symbol rates up to 260 GBaud and achieve net bitrates greater than 2 Tbit/s in coherent optical communications.

 

As the industry advances towards 6G, artificial intelligence (AI) tools are reaching a level of maturity where they can be used to solve difficult optimization in wireless communications systems. Traditional methods of calculating the channel state information (CSI) are viewed as among the best early use cases for AI in a wireless system.

 

Wireless research at the University of Malaga (UMA) developed an AI model for CSI feedback enhancement and needed to validate that their ML model performed better than traditional digital signal processing (DSP) for CSI feedback. They turned to Keysight to emulate the performance of their model in real-world conditions.

 

Building an interface layer that connected to Keysight’s PathWave System Design (SystemVue) modeling tool, UMA researchers were able to prove their AI model outperforms traditional approaches. Following this validation of the AI models, UMA and Keysight presented the models and the associated measurement best practices to the 3GPP as part of Release 18, the first 3GPP release studying AI/ML enhancements for the air interface. This ongoing partnership is continuing its work, with plans to make more contributions in the future. They intend to extend these findings to even more Keysight tools to enable wireless researchers everywhere.
