State of Security for Smart Home Devices

In recent years, consumer products have developed more functionality and have become increasingly connected. These highly interactive smart devices have been adopted at homes, in offices, and in public spaces. They are characterized by their quick time-to-market, typically embedded with little to no security, while having high connectivity to other devices and back-ends.

 

Vendors need to dedicate additional effort to ensure the presence of security in these products. Some of which include reputation, risk management, and customer requirements. The new forces directing vendors towards secure development are increasingly appearing in government regulations in the domain of IoT, and especially the consumer market.

 

Most of the initiatives coming from governments are structurally aligned and based on similar security standards. In this white paper, we will discuss the European standard, ETSI, as an example.

 

The main conclusion of this whitepaper is that the current state of security mechanisms present in the most common smart home devices can be significantly improved, both from the perspective of the security level provided to the final users and international regulations.
