Current approaches for secure data transmission using public key encryption rely on the time to find prime factors of large integers, which increases exponentially with the number of digits. A quantum algorithm developed by MIT Professor Peter Shor in 1994 can efficiently factor large integers but requires a fault tolerant quantum computer. Rapid advances in the field of quantum computing motivate the need for new approaches to transmit data securely. Quantum communication has the potential to become the ultimate secure communication method. The purpose of this application note is to present how Keysight can help enable research for discrete variable quantum key distribution (DV-QKD). Keysight offers a wide range of optical instrumentation for researching quantum key distribution and other applications in quantum communications. Paired with Labber Software, Keysight engineers have developed an easy-to-use solution for instrument control and lab automation.
