A wide dynamic range power sensor is an RF/microwave device designed to accurately measure power levels across a broad input range, typically from –60 dBm up to +20 dBm or higher. This wide range lets the sensor handle both very low and relatively high power signals without sacrificing accuracy.
By covering such a broad spectrum, a single sensor eliminates the need to switch sensors or add external attenuators during testing, simplifying workflows. This capability proves especially useful for testing devices with widely varying output powers, like multi-mode wireless transmitters or variable-gain amplifiers.
The sensor dynamically switches detection paths and applies calibration to maintain high accuracy and linearity across the entire range. Wide dynamic range power sensors offer an efficient solution for comprehensive power measurements without compromising performance or requiring complex setup changes.
Wide dynamic range power sensors typically employ a two-path diode detection architecture combined with signal processing:
Dual Detection Paths
A high-sensitivity path optimized for low-level signals captures weak RF power with high accuracy.
A wide-range path handles higher power signals without saturation.
Automatic Path Selection
The sensor’s internal processor dynamically switches between paths based on the input power level to maintain linearity and accuracy across the entire dynamic range.
Temperature and Frequency Compensation
Built-in calibration data and algorithms correct for temperature variations, frequency-dependent response, and diode nonlinearity.
Fast Measurement Speed
Despite the wide dynamic range, these sensors provide rapid, real-time measurements suitable for automated testing.
Wide dynamic range sensors are valuable in scenarios where signal power levels vary widely or where multiple test conditions are encountered without interrupting test flow:
Production Test and Automated Test Equipment (ATE)
Test systems that measure components or devices with widely varying output powers benefit from a single sensor solution.
Wireless Device Characterization
Evaluate transmitters that operate across multiple power states, such as smartphones or IoT devices with variable output levels.
Component and Subsystem Validation
Test amplifiers, attenuators, and mixers across their full operating power range without changing sensors or adding external attenuators.
Research and Development
Simplify experimental setups by eliminating the need to switch sensors when testing different power regimes.
Field and Maintenance Testing
Provide flexible measurement capability in environments where power levels are unpredictable.
