How to Capture and Analyze Acoustic Signals

Capture Dynamic Acoustic Signals

Acoustic signal capture begins by converting sound or mechanical vibration into an electrical signal with an appropriate transducer and acquiring the waveform with synchronized measurement channels. The data acquisition (DAQ) system must sample quickly enough to preserve the frequency content of interest while maintaining consistent timing between channels. A simultaneous-sampling digitizer enables several sensor signals to be acquired at the same instant, making it possible to compare acoustic or vibration responses from multiple locations. For sensors using Integrated Electronics Piezo-Electric (IEPE) interfaces, the measurement channel can also provide the excitation current required by a compatible transducer. The resulting dynamic data acquisition records provide the time-domain information needed for waveform inspection, acoustic signal capture, and vibration measurement.

Acoustic signal analysis can then move from the captured time waveform into the frequency domain. Applying a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) converts the sampled signal into a spectrum so engineers can identify dominant tones, harmonic components, and broadband content within the measured response. Using consistent sample rates and acquisition settings allows measurements to be compared between operating states, sensor positions, or design configurations. Multiple simultaneous channels can also be evaluated together to determine how acoustic or mechanical responses vary across a device. This combination of synchronized data acquisition, FFT analysis, vibration measurement, and PC-based visualization provides a repeatable workflow for investigating acoustic behavior in motors, compressors, fans, pumps, and other electromechanical assemblies.

Dynamic Acoustic Measurement Solution

Acoustic measurement requires capturing low-level sensor signals with sufficient bandwidth, synchronized sampling, and signal integrity to preserve the frequency content of interest. The Keysight solution combines a data acquisition system with a simultaneous-sampling digitizer to acquire multiple acoustic or vibration channels at the same instant, allowing engineers to compare responses across sensor locations or operating conditions. Integrated excitation supports compatible IEPE sensors, reducing the need for separate sensor-power hardware. High-resolution digitization and configurable sampling rates support dynamic data acquisition of both time-domain waveforms and higher-frequency signal components. After acquisition, the recorded data can be reviewed in the time domain and transformed using FFT analysis to identify dominant tones, harmonics, and broadband noise. This workflow supports acoustic signal capture, acoustic signal analysis, vibration measurement, and repeatable comparison of electromechanical noise sources across operating states or design changes.
