This application note demonstrates how to model high-power semiconductor lasers using Keysight's Tapered Laser Utility. These lasers are used in many industries, such as medicine and manufacturing, and can be combined into arrays for more power. However, challenges like facet damage and filamentation can limit performance. To address these issues, different design features, such as tapering, beam spoilers and gain-guiding, can be added.
The simulation method combines 3D Beam Propagation Method (BPM) and electrical transport analysis to model how the laser behaves under different conditions. This helps with design choices like the taper size or spoiler placement. In this example, a gain-guided tapered laser is simulated both with and without beam spoilers, and the results are compared. The far-field plots show that adding beam spoilers improves the beam shape and quality.
This example highlights how the Tapered Laser Utility can be used to explore and improve laser designs before manufacturing.
