How to Test mmWave Antenna Performance

Check mmWave Antenna Behavior Over The Air

Millimeter-wave antenna testing requires an over-the-air (OTA) path because the antenna is part of the radio-frequency interface being evaluated. The device is placed inside the chamber while horn antennas establish transmit and receive paths between the device and the external measurement platform.

Adjustable antenna positions allow the measurement geometry to be changed when checking device antenna behavior. Integrated radio-frequency switches select measurement paths, while positioning the millimeter-wave radio head close to the horn antenna connections limits the additional path length between the instrumentation and chamber.

mmWave Antenna Test Solution

Perform antenna checks by placing the device in the chamber and measuring its behavior through one or more controlled over-the-air paths. The F9681A provides four horn antennas with adjustable positions, allowing different measurement paths to be established around the device. Integrated switches simplify RF routing, and the chamber includes mounting space for an M1740A mmWave transceiver near the horn antenna connections to reduce path loss. An E6681A EXM-WB or E7515B UXM 5G platform can provide the associated test interface. The compact setup supports antenna-behavior checks on production lines, repair benches, and general bench setups.
