Measure Where Switching Loss Occurs

Measuring switching transistor power and energy loss requires simultaneous voltage and current measurements during the turn-on and turn-off intervals, where the device dissipates most of its switching loss. The measurement is performed by capturing the switching waveform, multiplying voltage and current to obtain instantaneous power, and integrating that result over the switching interval to determine energy loss per event.

The test setup needs an oscilloscope with power measurement software, a differential voltage probe on the switching device, a current probe in the current path, and probe deskew to align both measurement paths before calculating instantaneous power and integrated energy loss. Reviewing the turn-on and turn-off loss separately makes it possible to see where the switching transistor is dissipating power and how those losses contribute to overall converter efficiency.

Switching Loss Measurement Solution

Accurate switching loss analysis requires capturing switching voltage and current together during the transition interval and applying power calculations to the measured waveforms. Keysight Advanced benchtop oscilloscopes acquire the voltage and current signals, while power measurement software calculates instantaneous power and integrated energy loss across each switching event.
