The integration of AI/ML into cellular networks has only become feasible recently due to a combination of advancements in technology and the evolving needs of modern communication systems. A big game changer in this space has been the disaggregation of the Radio Access Network (RAN) that follows ongoing trends in software defined networks, compute virtualization and containerization, alongside the development and publication of standardized and, most importantly, open interfaces between the previously proprietary RAN functions. Future cellular networks will be open, virtual and cloud native.
