Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) and the fifth-generation wireless communication (5G) are becoming key technologies for future industrial communications. Both technologies provide services based on a common network infrastructure, which includes deterministic, reliable, and low latency communications that are needed for time-sensitive applications. Time critical communications can be achieved by leveraging capabilities of TSN and 5G.
Time Sensitive Networking is based on standards that are introduced by the IEEE 802.1 working group, which provides deterministic connectivity through IEEE 802 networks, including guaranteed packet transport with bounded latency, low packet delay variation, and low packet loss. Combining TSN with 5G can significantly increase the flexibility of the network and the deployment of industrial equipment.
Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has performed significant 5G standardization work with the introduction of concepts and specifications around ultra-reliable, low latency communications or URLLC as part of 3GPP Release 15 and 16. Support for 5G interworking with TSN was introduced in Release 16 and 17. Standardization includes the understanding of how TSN will be adopted and applied in the smart factory environment.
