Characterizing the Key Performance Indicators of Power Amplifiers

As 5G base stations and devices proliferate, the challenges of handling high-frequency signals necessitate the judicious use of power amplifiers. Facing increasing attenuation due to high carrier frequencies and wide bandwidths, 5G signals require amplification on both the transmit and receive sides of the system. However, power amplifiers constitute one of the highest upfront material costs as well as one of the most power-intensive devices in the system.

This application note will discuss the basic tradeoffs of power amplifiers and some of the most important characteristics to consider within a few common use cases. These key performance indicators (KPIs), and how to measure them, will be discussed at length. This application note illustrates measurement procedures with both spectrum and network analyzers, to both compare the results and broaden the potential audience. Specific SCPI commands and setup notes are found in the Appendix.
