Atmospheric window: Parts of the electromagnetic spectrum can easily transmit information from the space segment to the ground segment in the atmospheric window. To increase data rates, satellite communications push system-design boundaries to the limits of the atmospheric window.

Keplerian set: These six orbital elements define Earth-orbiting artificial satellites. Many factors impact satellite orbits including the effects of a nonspherical Earth, atmospheric drag, and the gravitational effects of objects outside of the two-body system.

Link budget: This metric is computed for both the uplink and downlink including all system gains and losses.
