The Battery Management Systems (BMS)
The electrification of road vehicles and many modern concepts for stationary energy storage rely on the use of lithium-ion battery cells and the connection of such in series. Lithium-ion cells and especially their assembly in battery-modules and battery-packs require a management system to keep the cells within their specific operating conditions to use them as efficiently and as safely as possible. This requires monitoring the voltage of each cell, the temperature, as well as the current. Additionally, to achieve the best utilization of the battery capacity the charge in all cells should be balanced. Thus, a battery management system (BMS) is required, that provides suitable monitoring and control algorithms, measurement equipment and balancing strategy. Additionally, the BMS might have additional tasks like the communication with the supervisory system (e.g. the electronic control unit in a vehicle); estimation of the State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH) of the battery; control of the output contactors of the battery pack; control of the battery cooling; check of the polarity at the output terminals; control of the charging process; determination of the maximal charging and discharging power allowed; detection of faults; and so on.
