The Challenges
Software-defined networking (SDN) is transforming the way many organizations are building networks. Gone are time-consuming, error-prone tasks such as manual provisioning since unified management interfaces have helped improve efficiency, agility, and scalability. By embracing SDN — and by extension, the software-defined data center (SDDC) — enterprise IT can meet business demands faster by quickly deploying virtualized infrastructure and applications at scale.
As with any data center, end-to-end monitoring is critical for SDDCs. Security and performance monitoring tools depend on rich packet data to detect potential threats and track vital quality-of-service (QoS) metrics. In the past this was relatively easy, you would just tap into the physical infrastructure. Today, with the widespread deployment of virtualized or partially virtualized environments, you also need to consider the considerably more difficult task of tapping into the virtual infrastructure in order to maintain the visibility you need, an approach that requires specialized solutions.
