As more products and services utilize wireless communication, the world’s wireless bands are getting more and more crowded. Crowding increases the probability of collisions and bottlenecks, so it’s imperative for device designers to make sure their equipment can successfully operate in this busy new environment.
Transmissions in this band are generally not coordinated, so there are many opportunities for collisions and interference. Some behaviors such as channel scanning can be a particularly troublesome combination of brief (small fraction of a second), wideband (tens of MHz) and are rare (occurring only every few seconds to minutes). Understanding the dynamics of the band is therefore vital to keeping data payloads moving.
