Emulating Multipath Effects with Radar Scene Emulators

Radar sensors in Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) must operate effectively in dense clutter and low grazing angles, where multipath wave propagation is common. This paper proposes a novel use of a Radar Scene Emulator (RSE) to emulate multipath effects by synchronizing multiple point reflections to establish direct and indirect reflection paths. A simplified mathematical model to simulate multipath effects is implemented in both software and the RSE. Measurements using the RSE and an automotive radar are compared to the simulation, showing a characteristic interference pattern match. These results demonstrate the model’s potential for more complex multipath effect simulations.
