Setting up multi-point temperature measurements based on design complexity

Making multi-point temperature measurements requires an understanding of the size and design complexity of the product. Depending on the size and complexity of the device, the design engineer needs to determine the number of temperature points to monitor ― from at least three temperature points for simple devices to more than ten points for complex devices. Understanding the temperature measurements gives design engineers valuable insights to make good design decisions, including using suitable components, making proper circuit design considerations, or adding heat sinks to dissipate the heat.

Selecting the right tools for temperature monitoring is essential. For sensitive devices, design engineers are likely to make temperature measurements using a temperature control chamber. Ideally, they will use a compact data acquisition (DAQ) system with long sensor cables that can scan and measure multiple temperature points very quickly and record them on a computer or laptop remotely. Additionally, DAQ software can assist in configuring the wiring, selecting triggering mechanisms, executing measurements, and plotting data graphically for real-time monitoring and analysis.
