A multimeter refers to a measuring meter that makes multiple types of measurements, such as alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) voltage, AC or DC current, resistance, temperature, capacitance, and more parameters. A modern digital multimeter uses digital and logic technology to miniaturize and enable many features in its internal system. With digital technology, digital multimeters can have graphical displays, perform data logging and signal digitizing capabilities, programmability, and communicate with external devices.
A DMM is a versatile tool that can measure a wide variety of electrical parameters including:
Accuracy and resolution are two different but related specifications of a digital multimeter (DMM). Accuracy defines how close the measured value is to the true value of the signal, usually expressed as a percentage of the reading plus a number of counts. It tells you the reliability of the result. Resolution, on the other hand, refers to the smallest change a DMM can display, often determined by the number of digits or counts on the display. A DMM may have high resolution but poor accuracy, meaning it can show very fine measurement steps but not necessarily the correct value. Ideally, a good DMM balances both high resolution and high accuracy to ensure precise and reliable measurements.
