Verifying real-world beamforming and ULPI in the lab

Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (Massive MIMO) O-RAN Radio Units (O-RUs) are critical to enabling efficient and scalable 5G networks. But testing them is complex, as there are multiple beamforming methods that can be applied, and each one has different protocol definition and involves different section extensions. To validate that the O-RU has correctly implemented the beamforming method, beam power, beamforming accuracy as well as downlink and uplink throughput and signal EVM need to be measured.

Adding Uplink Performance Improvement (ULPI) support only raises the stakes with real time Demodulation Reference Signal (DMRS) handling, new section types and section extensions enabling new features such as Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise Ratio (SINR) reporting, symbol reordering, and real-time channel estimation requirements. All this must work together without breaking existing features, and it must be tested before field deployment. From development through conformance testing, engineers need reliable tools that understand O-RAN standards and simplify testing workflow.
