Keysight Technologies, in collaboration with the Institut d’Électronique, de Microélectronique et de Nanotechnologie (IEMN), the University of Lille, Virginia Diodes Inc. (VDI), and Micro Harmonics, has demonstrated a significant advancement in sub-terahertz (sub‑THz) communications for future 6G systems. The joint research focuses on overcoming one of the most critical challenges in high-frequency wireless communication: achieving reliable non-line-of-sight (NLoS) connectivity in indoor environments where signal blockage and high path loss can severely impact performance.
The project introduces a novel approach combining Reflective Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) with dual‑polarization transmission techniques. RIS technology could dynamically redirect sub‑THz signals, helping restore connectivity in obstructed scenarios, while dual polarization enhances spectrum efficiency and increases channel capacity without requiring additional bandwidth. Together, these technologies enable more robust and resilient wireless links, paving the way for high-throughput indoor applications such as smart manufacturing, industrial automation, and advanced research environments.
The experimental setup integrates a comprehensive Keysight testbed, including Arbitrary Waveform Generators (AWG), VXG signal generators, oscilloscopes, and PathWave software for signal generation and vector signal analysis. These solutions enable precise generation, transmission, and evaluation of communication-modulated signals based on IEEE 802.15.3d standards. The inclusion of VDI converters and Micro Harmonics orthomode transducers further supports dual‑polarized signal transmission and measurement across RIS-assisted channels.
This collaboration provides valuable insights into polarization-dependent propagation, channel behavior, and performance validation of RIS-assisted THz communication links. It also demonstrates how advanced measurement technologies can accelerate early-stage research and reduce the gap between theoretical innovation and practical deployment.
