Basics of WLAN Client-Server Architecture

A typical network architecture consists of a client and a server. The connection between them can be wired or wireless, it does not matter as long as they are connected.

  • A client is the device that requests a service or resource from the server.
  • A server is a physical computer run services to serve the needs of other computers.

In simple words, client services request to the server where server services response to the client.

Access Point Mode and Station Mode

Typically, Wireless Local-Area Network (WLAN) devices can run in one of the two modes: Access Point mode or Station mode.

  • Station mode (STA) mode is normally what most people understand as normal mode for a WLAN device. A device will use station mode to join a network. It is just like your PC or mobile phone joining your home Wi-Fi network. In this case, your PC or your mobile phone will run in station mode. Other example of devices running in station mode are wearables, Internet Protocol television (IPTVs), and various IoT devices.
