Advancing Connected Mobility: Cooperative Perception and V2X Validation in Shuttle2X

The Shuttle2X project addresses urban mobility challenges by enabling autonomous shuttles to operate safely and efficiently through cooperative perception and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. Funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), Shuttle2X integrates infrastructure-based sensors with onboard systems to overcome limitations such as occlusions and blind spots. Roadside units equipped with cameras, LiDAR, and computing platforms generate Cooperative Perception Messages (CPMs) and transmit them to shuttles via DSRC and 5G NR sidelink, creating a comprehensive environmental view.

 

Key benefits include enhanced safety through extended perception, improved operational efficiency with real-time data exchange, and scalability via modular design and open standards. Shuttle2X validates interoperability between DSRC and emerging 5G NR technologies, ensuring long-term viability for V2X deployments. Research results confirm robust sidelink communication with low packet error rates, extended detection ranges, and reduced intersection crossing times. The project also contributed to refining ETSI CPM standards and implementing 3GPP Release 16-compliant sidelink stacks.

 

Keysight played a pivotal role by providing WaveBee V2X solutions, including RSUs, OBUs, visualization tools, and SDKs that simplify integration with ROS2. These tools enabled rapid development and real-time demonstration at IAVVC 2025, showcasing hybrid communication and cooperative perception in action. Beyond Shuttle2X, Keysight offers a comprehensive V2X validation framework covering Software-in-the-Loop, Hardware-in-the-Loop, and field trials, aligned with global standards to ensure compliance and interoperability.

 

Shuttle2X sets a benchmark for connected mobility, proving that collaborative research and advanced validation tools can accelerate the transition from concept to deployment. As V2X becomes the backbone of intelligent transportation systems, continuous testing and regulatory alignment will be critical for achieving safe, scalable, and privacy-conscious mobility solutions.
