Coherent Optical Communications Test Challenges

This application note describes the troubleshooting needs of coherent optical communication and how to use Keysight products to improve coherent optical system testing.

Test and Measurement for Coherent Optical Transceivers

Coherent technology was traditionally used for long-haul and metro networks. However, over the years, this technology has been increasingly adopted for shorter reach applications, such as Data-Center Interconnect (DCI) and 5G/6G front/backhaul, to overcome physical limitations of Intensity-Modulation/Direct-Detect (IM/DD) as those applications demand higher throughput.

Coherent Optical Solutions Using AWGs

To maximize the throughput of your existing optical networks, you must use modulation and multiplexing schemes. There are always limitations due to your system’s signal-to-noise-ratio and fiber lengths. But knowing the benefits of each technique equips you with the information you need to design and test your system. To provide the NRZ and other signals to your transmitter, you need an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG). Keysight has the AWG to fit your needs.
