GPUTrace

Data Sheets

GPUTrace is integrated into LucidShape optical simulation software, designed to significantly accelerate light simulations by utilizing the advanced computational power of modern NVIDIA Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). While traditional simulations rely on Central Processing Units (CPUs), which are limited to single-thread or multi-thread operations, GPUTrace harnesses thousands of small processors within GPUs that are optimized for geometrical calculations. This approach enables faster and more efficient optical simulations, allowing users to focus on improving designs rather than waiting for lengthy simulation processes.

LucidShape already employs efficient multithreading to utilize multiple CPU cores, but GPUTrace takes performance to the next level. Benchmark tests comparing multi-core CPU simulations with GPU-based simulations on the same machine demonstrated remarkable results. Using GPUTrace, simulation times were reduced by up to 30 times, showcasing the immense potential of GPU technology in optical simulations. This speed boost is particularly beneficial for demanding applications such as ray tracing light pipes, where rapid simulation results can lead to better design optimization and innovation.

The document highlights the rapid growth in GPU calculation power compared to CPUs over recent years, as illustrated in Figure 2. This trend underscores the promise of GPU technology in delivering faster and more efficient computational capabilities for optical simulations. Additionally, benchmark results (Figure 3) show the significant speed-up achieved by GPUTrace across various real-life models, including tail lamps and reflectors, with performance improvements ranging from 17x to 38x compared to single-core CPU simulations.

To utilize GPUTrace, users only need a modern NVIDIA graphics card, which is available in various models to suit different performance needs and budgets. The document emphasizes that fast results can be achieved even with low-cost hardware, making GPUTrace accessible to a wide range of users.

LucidShape is the first optical simulation software to integrate GPU technology, setting a new standard for simulation speed and efficiency. As graphics card technology continues to advance, even greater performance improvements are expected in the future. For more information about GPUTrace and LucidShape, users are encouraged to visit the LucidShape page or contact Keysight Technologies for support.
