Application Notes
Nanoindentation is the most commonly applied method for testing the mechanical properties of materials. In materials science, studying the temperature dependence of mechanical properties due to plasticity transition or phase transformations requires an in-depth understanding of the transition mechanisms active at nanoscale. Nanoindentation provides a quick, precise and effective method to study transition mechanisms by characterizing or mapping the mechanical properties of materials. Applications range from Young’s modulus, hardness, strain sensitivity, and creep resistance at elevated temperatures. This method may be implemented in a wide range of applications for studying Si/Ga semiconductor phase transitions, glass transitions, phase transformation in metallic bulks, super-elasticity/super-plasticity in alloys and metallic/polymeric recrystallizations [1-6]. Directly extracting the mechanical properties of materials from the load-displacement curves using a nanoindentation instrument, facilitates the measurement and analysis of temperature-sensitive properties of materials more effectively than conventionallyscaled tension or compression tests. In addition, the simplicity of the sample preparation and test setup of a Nano Indenter G200 from Keysight Technologies, Inc. reduces the time required for sample preparations by eliminating steps, such as machining.
