Why do I need to pay installation/calibration charges for N4010A license-only upgrades?

The N4010A has several license-only upgrade paths, most of which enhance the base technology options that are already enabled in the unit.

For example, upgrade N4010AK-107 is a license-only upgrade that enables EDR Loopback in a unit that already has option 101 (Bluetooth) enabled.

However, there are also some license-only upgrade paths that enable the base technology options:

  • N4010AK-101:
This license-only upgrade enables option 101 (Bluetooth). It can be used on any N4010A, as the Bluetooth hardware is present in every unit.
  • N4010AK-102:
This license-only upgrade enables option 102 (WLAN 2.4GHz). Under normal circumstances option 102 would require additional hardware, via upgrade kit N4010AK-502. However, if option 105 (Bluetooth EDR TX/RX) or option 109 (Bluetooth Low Energy TX/RX) is installed then the required hardware is already present.
  • N4010AK-103:
This license-only upgrade enables option 103 (WLAN 5GHz). Under normal circumstances option 103 would require additional hardware, via upgrade kit N4010AK-503. However, if option 105 (Bluetooth EDR TX/RX), option 109 (Bluetooth Low Energy TX/RX), or option 102 (WLAN 2.4GHz) is installed then the required hardware is already present.

When an N4010A is manufactured, Keysight calibrates all of the hardware that's present in the unit, even if some of the base technology options will be disabled prior to shipment.

However, if the unit is repaired or re-calibrated at any time after shipment, the calibration data for the disabled base technology options becomes stale. This unfortunately means that calibration is required when a license-only upgrade is applied.

In these scenarios you may not need to pay for re-calibration:

  • If you own a license for Keysight's Test Management Environment (TME) Software, and are able to re-calibrate the N4010A yourself.
  • If your unit has not been repaired or re-calibrated since it was purchased.
  • If you are using the R1287A service charges as a separate line item on the quote/order for in-country tax purposes.

If you meet either of these conditions, then discuss this with your Keysight representative to see if the service charges can be removed from the quote.
