Eight commonly asked questions about the Medalist i3070 Series 5

1. What is the Keysight Medalist i3070 Series 5?

Keysight’s Medalist i3070 Series 5, also referred to as the S5 among many users, is a new in-circuit test (ICT) system that comprises a newly-designed measurement card called the analog stimulus and response unit (ASRU) N revision cards and 12 MPS hybrid pin cards.
The new features include ASRU N revision with a digitized measurement circuit to speed-up unpowered analog tests, a power monitoring circuit that can monitor power nodes, fixture power supplies for powering fixture electronics and a high voltage Zener measurement circuit that can test up to 60 V zener diodes.
The 12 MPS hybrid pin cards can speed up digital tests with faster vector clock cycles.

2. What is the analog stimulus and response unit (ASRU) card?

The ASRU card provides analog measurement capabilities and contains the following circuit elements:
• Sources, detectors and measurement operational amplifier
• Probe circuit
• Device under test (DUT) DC power supply ports
• Functional ports for external analog test equipments

3. What are hybrid pin cards?

Hybrid pin cards are used for analog measurement access with multiplexing digital drivers/receivers channels.

4. What is the digitized measurement circuit that is found on the analog stimulus and response unit (ASRU) N revision card?

The digitized measurement circuit (DMC) utilizes multiple micro-controllers and analog-digital convertors to achieve faster analog measurement. The ‘ASRU speedup’ is a new test option in the test source file. It instructs the i3070 in-circuit test system to use the DMC to do measurements and improves test throughputs.

5. What is the power monitoring circuit?

The power monitoring circuit (PMC) is a new feature available on the ASRU N revision card of the Keysight Medalist i3070 Series 5 in-circuit tester. It provides real-time voltage monitoring to the board power nodes during debugging or digital, boundary scan and mixed tests. PMC can protect the integrate circuit (IC) in the event of the voltage going beyond the user-defined limits during debug or running digital tests. In addition, safeguard is present to protect ICs from back drive currents. In short, the device under test is fully protected by the i3070 Series 5 with the safeguard, PMC and current limit features.

6. What is the fixture power supply?

The fixture power supply (FPS) is a new feature that provides constant power supplies, +5 V and +12 V, for fixture electronics or external powering purposes. The FPS can be turned on during unpowered and powered testing.

7. What are Keysight Vectorless Test EP (VTEP) and Testjet?

Keysight Vectorless Test EP (VTEP) and Keysight Testjet are solutions comprising both hardware and software that employ a unique test technique in testing for opens on printed circuit board assemblies. VTEP is more sensitive and accurate than Testjet. In principle, they are the same in measuring the small capacitance between a pin on the board. The advantages of these test methodologies include the fact that no programming is required, no test library required, excellent pin level fault diagnostics and high reliability.

8. How do Keysight’s in-circuit testers (ICT) measure analog components like resistor and capacitors?

The Keysight ICT uses system measurement buses and relay matrices to connect the components under test to voltage sources, detectors and the MOA circuit.
