How can the memory in a 438A Power Meter be erased for security purposes?

The following sequence of keypresses can be used to erase any information contained in the storage registers of the 438A Power Meter.

Step 1: Erase Register 0 (Auto-stored Previous Configuration)

  • Press [CAL FACTOR], [9][9], [ENTER]
  • Press [CAL FACTOR], [1][0][0], [ENTER]

Step 2: Erase Registers 1 To 19 (User Configurations)

  • Press [PRESET]
  • Press [STORE], [1], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [2], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [3], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [4], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [5], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [6], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [7], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [8], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [9], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][0], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][1], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][2], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][3], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][4], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][5], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][6], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][7], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][8], [ENTER]
  • Press [STORE], [1][9], [ENTER]

Alternatively, the following remote command sequence can be used to perform the same task.

  • KB99EN (Set CAL FACTOR to 99%)
  • KB100EN (Set CAL FACTOR to 100%)
  • PR (PRESET the instrument to it's default configuration)
  • ST1EN (Store the current configuration in register 1)
  • ST2EN (Store the current configuration in register 2)
  • ST3EN (Store the current configuration in register 3)
  • ST4EN (Store the current configuration in register 4)
  • ST5EN (Store the current configuration in register 5)
  • ST6EN (Store the current configuration in register 6)
  • ST7EN (Store the current configuration in register 7)
  • ST8EN (Store the current configuration in register 8)
  • ST9EN (Store the current configuration in register 9)
  • ST10EN (Store the current configuration in register 10)
  • ST11EN (Store the current configuration in register 11)
  • ST12EN (Store the current configuration in register 12)
  • ST13EN (Store the current configuration in register 13)
  • ST14EN (Store the current configuration in register 14)
  • ST15EN (Store the current configuration in register 15)
  • ST16EN (Store the current configuration in register 16)
  • ST17EN (Store the current configuration in register 17)
  • ST18EN (Store the current configuration in register 18)
  • ST19EN (Store the current configuration in register 19)

Note that these procedures do not require a sensor to be connected to the instrument. However, if a sensor is not connected, an 'Error' indication will be displayed in the status window - this can be ignored, as the instrument will still act on the applied keypresses or commands.
