How do I configure my Keysight IO Libraries Suite 14 to communicate with my ENA via LAN?

(SUPPORTED MODELS IN BOLD: E5071C E5072A E5070B/71B E5070A/71A E5061A/62A E5061B E5063A E5091A E5092A)

Within the text below, instrument hard key indications are delineated as [...]. Soft keys are indicated as Bold text

In order to communicate to the ENA analyzers via LAN with the Keysight IO Libraries Suite 14, please perform the following:

Preparing the ENA analyzer:

  • Enable the SICL-LAN server of the analyzer via the keystrokes
[System] - Misc Setup - Network Setup - SICL-LAN Server [ON]
  • Set the GPIB address of the analyzer for control via the SICL-LAN server
[System] - Misc Setup - Network Setup - SICL-LAN Address [XX]
"XX" represents an address number from 0 to 30
  • Upon completion of these modifications the analyzer's firmware must be restarted. When prompted by the analyzer, allow the analyzer to restart the firmware.
  • Determine (or set) the analyzer's internet protocol (IP) address or the analyzers network identification. To determine (or set) the analyzer's IP address select [System] - Misc Setup - Network Setup - Network Configuration. Double-click on the Local Area Configuration. Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and press Properties to setup the IP. Note the IP address or network identification. For this example the analyzer's IP address = 192.168.1.2
  • Alternatively, to determine the analyzer's network identification select [System] - Misc Setup - Network Setup - Network Identification and note the "Full computer name:" entry.

In order to establish communication to the analyzer using the TCP/IP protocol the Keysight IO Libraries must be configured on the external controller. This section outlines the Keysight IO libraries configuration procedure when using the external controller in the Windows environment.

Preparing the Keysight IO Libraries at the external controller:

  • Launch the Keysight Connection Expert from the Keysight IO Control utility.
  • Click on Add Interface.
  • Select the "Remote GPIB Interface (via E5810A or Remote IO Server)"
  • Select the "Add" button.

See next image for details and results of the following steps:

  • In the resultant window, select the appropriate radio button, "Host Name:" or "IP Address:" and enter either the ENA's computer name (Hostname) or IP address.
  • Modify the Interface Name on Remote Host to: hpib9.
  • Click on the "Test connection" button.
  • Ensure the following indications appear:
    "The interface was successfully opened"
    "This item has been verified"
Green sphere with white check mark thru the middle.
  • If the indications above do not appear. There has been a failure in the configuration of either the analyzer and/or the Keysight IO Control Suite 14 Libraries. Recheck all the previous settings. If failure to connect persists please contact Keysight Technologies. If the indications above do appear, then select the "OK" button.

  • Upon successfully connecting the Keysight IO Control Suite 14 Libraries to the analyzer a screen similar to that shown below should appear. Note the newly added "Remote(GPIBx)" interface with the indication of the ENA analyzer's model number in the connection tree. For this specific configuration the indication is "E5071B (GPIB2::17::INSTR)", this is the VISA address or VISA interface name.
  • The "E5071B" portion of the string "E5071B (GPIB2::17::INSTR)" indication is an auto generated in response to a "*IDN?" identification query which is asserted when the "OK" button was selected. All IEEE 488.2 compliant instruments will respond to this query.
