Introduction
Cellular vendors such as Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T began rolling out 5G terrestrial networks in 2019; however, 2023 nationwide coverage will be less than 54%, leaving room for growth. Adding 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) creates a nexus to expand 5G coverage globally. It is well suited for enhanced mobile broadband.
NTN has evolved into a broad term encompassing various networks involving non-terrestrial flying objects. This category includes satellite communications networks, high-altitude platform systems, and air-to-ground networks. Satellite communication networks rely on spaceborne platforms, such as low-Earth-orbiting (LEO) satellites, medium-Earth-orbiting (MEO) satellites, and geosynchronous Earth-orbiting (GEO) satellites. Recently, there has been a renewed global interest in the broadband capabilities offered by LEO NTNs, particularly with the emergence of large satellite constellations.
