What Do I Do About a "Testhead Won't Boot" Problem? (Quick Reference)

Question:

What do I do about a "Testhead won't boot" problem? (Quick Reference)

Answer:

(Date: Oct 96: Version B.02.XX) This is a list of some of the messages that you might get if your testhead won't boot and what to do about them. This list shows the most likely things to fix when these messages are encountered, but they may be caused by other situations as well. If your testhead still won't boot, or you get different messages or no message at all, please use the following file to help determine the problem:

/etc/newconfig/hp3070/README.LAN_trouble

Error Message: R1101 System Security problem detected

Solution: You probably have a problem with your .enable file. Run "codeword -l" at a UNIX prompt to help determine the exact problem. You may have to re-enter all your codewords using the UNIX codeword command.

Error Message: Failed operating system download

Solution: There is probably a problem with either an out-of-date file or a problem with your control card specification in the official config file. First, we need to check for the out-of-date files.

Type these statements at the UNIX prompt:

cd /usr/hp3070/lib
ll *tle*.X

Your display should look like this:

-r--r--r-- 1

hp3070

hp3070

251684

Jul 11

10:39

ctle.X

-r--r--r-- 1

hp3070

hp3070

10:43

mtle.X

-r--r--r-- 1

hp3070

hp3070

402026

Jul 11

10:55

mtle030.X

All three files should have the same mode, ownership, and group, and all three files should have the same date as each other (not necessarily the date shown here). If not, you will probably need to reload software.

If these files are ok, there may be a problem with how your control card is described to the testhead in the official config file (/hp3070/diagnostics/th1/config). This can happen if you recently restored your system from tape, or if your config file has been changed.

In order to try to solve this, try the following: Make a copy of your official config file in a safe place. Look at the official config file, and see what is described in slot 6 of each module. If the cards are described as "control" or "control advanced", try changing them to read "control plus", and if they're described as "control plus", try changing them to "control" or "control advanced". Then recompile the config file by typing this statement at the UNIX prompt:

qcomp -t /hp3070/diagnostics/th1/config

You should see a message stating that the file compiled with no errors or warnings and an object file was produced. If you get errors, you may wish to look for typos, or just replace the modified copy with the original you saved earlier.

If neither setting for the control cards works, it's possible that you have a hardware problem.

Error Message: execvp failed on pmhserv

Solution: If you get this message, one of your HP3070 files has the wrong checksum or file permissions.

To verify the software, log in as "root". From a UNIX shell, type:

cd /
/usr/contrib/bin/verflists -i

This will tell you which filesets it's verifying and any errors it finds. If you see any lines that contain the word "checksum", you may have a serious problem, and you may need to reload the HP3070 software. If there are problems with owner, group, or mode, run

/usr/contrib/bin/verflists -Fci

to fix them. You may have some warnings, especially some that start with "cannot stat". These may be harmless, or might point the way to a solution to a more difficult problem, so please save your errors.

Error Message: no exceptions

Solution: Something is probably wrong with your config file. You should look at the file "/hp3070/diagnostics/th1/config" to make sure that the line following the section labeled "CONFIGURATION FOR TESTHEAD" is as follows:

testhead name "testhead1"

If it isn't, please save a copy of your current config file in "config.old" in the same directory, and modify the config file so that the testhead name line reads exactly as above.

Once you have edited the file, compile it by typing:

qcomp -t /hp3070/diagnostics/th1/config

and attempt to boot the testhead again.

Other Error Messages

If your testhead won't boot, and you get other messages or no message at all, please use the following file to help determine the problem:

/etc/newconfig/hp3070/README.LAN_trouble
