Measurement Matters – Follow Traceability

Measurements are traceable to the International System of Units (SI) via national metrology institutes (NMIs) such as NIST (USA), NPL (UK), NRC (Canada), NIM (China), and KRISS (South Korea).

 

Traceability includes

  • calculated measurement uncertainty (MU)
  • appropriate calibration methods
  • calibration performed by technically competent individuals

NMIs establish traceability and provide a reference standard so that we can all share the same level of confidence in the accuracy with which we make our measurements. Imagine if there were no global reference for time. We owe thanks to SI for the global synchronization of travel and much more.
