Preventing and Solving Common Test and Measurement Problems

Basic principles make test setup easier and safer

 

Protect yourself, the equipment, and your device-under-test (DUT)

  1. Read the warnings and cautions in the product manuals. Familiarize yourself with the functions you will be using. Many instruments enable you to access help by pushing and holding a front-panel button. 
  2. Configure your instrument according to your local power supply before plugging into the receptacle because instruments can support different supply voltages. 
  3. Use anti-static mats and storage bags as appropriate. 
  4. Inspect cables and connectors for wear and damage, and only use ones that are in good physical condition. Use care in routing cables and making connections.
  5. Clear your workspace of clutter, keep food and drinks away, and ensure that there is adequate space around the instruments to allow for sufficient airflow.
  6. Use front-panel self-test or standard commands for programmable instruments (SCPI) self-tests (often *TST? or TEST:ALL?).
