How can I connect a PSG signal generator Primary/Secondary setup to be used with an 8757D scalar network analyzer?

Two PSGs can be used in a Primary/Secondary setup with an 8757D using the following procedure:

Initial System Setup:

  1. Set up the PSG that you will use as the primary to operate with the 8757D. The instructions for this procedure are also contained in the FAQs.
  2. Add the second PSG source to the 8757D and PSG connected as shown in the figure below:

 a. Connect the auxiliary interfaces of the two PSGs using a 9-pin D-subminiature male-to-male RS232 cable. This cable is available from Keysight Technologies as part number 8120-8806.

b. Connect the Primary PSG 10 MHz reference output to the Secondary PSG 10 MHz reference input. The Primary PSG time base is the frequency reference for both PSGs

Setup of the Secondary PSG:

  1. Set up the Secondary PSG power settings by pressing
    a)  > and set to 0 dBm (or the desired amplitude)
    b)  and entering the desired frequency (± the desired offet) to set the IF freq
  2. Set up the Secondary PSG power settings by pressing Amplitude and set to 0 dBm (or the desired amplitude).
  3. On Secondary PSG, press Sweep > Sweep Type > Secondary. Also set the Secondary triggering to continuous.

Sweep times must be the same for both PSGs and the Secondary must be set to continuous triggering, but the Primary can be set to any triggering mode.

Setup of the Primary PSG:

  1. On Primary PSG, press Sweep > Sweep Type > Primary.
  2. Verify that the frequency and amplitude of both PSGs are set to the desired frequency range and amplitude level.
  3. Ensure the sweep time of the Secondary PSG matches that of the Primary PSG. If not, reset the Secondary sweep time to that of the Primary PSG.
Note: Occasionally this configuration of instruments may lock up, i.e. scalar network analyzer will stop sweeping.
  4. Save the Primary/Secondary PSG setup configurations by pressing  Save > Select Reg, entering a register number (0 through 99), then pressing Save Reg. Perform this step on both PSGs.

If the scalar network analyzer should stop sweeping, just recall the Secondary PSG setup configuration by pressing Recall > RECALL Reg, entering the register number the configuration was saved on and pressing Enter.

If the scalar network  analyzer is still not sweeping, also recall the Primary PSG seup configuation using the same steps.
