Boundary Scan Test – How to Successfully Debug

Application Notes

Boundary Scan test technology (IEEE 1149) is now commonly used in the electronic test industry today. However, there is always a concern on the ability of test engineers and technicians to effectively handle the debugging of a boundary scan test.

In this document, will talk about:

  • Requirements for successful boundary scan implementation
  • Setting up a boundary scan test in the i1000D test program
  • i1000D boundary scan debug tips

This document will show how you can reduce your engineering time using this method.

The Factors of Success Boundary Scan

Boundary scan debugging is no different from a complex digital debug. All digital debugging tools can be used for boundary scan debug. Certainly, boundary scan debug is more complex than general digital debug. A good boundary scan test setup requires:

  1. An i1000D test fixture with good digital signal quality
  2. Stable working voltages on the DUT that is related to the Boundary Scan device
  3. Accurate BSDL file
  4. Correct Logic levels for the digital drivers/receivers.
