Application Notes
Introduction
Polarized capacitor, also known as “electrolytic capacitor” or simply “electrolytic”, plays an essential role in guaranteeing that the output of a power supply can source the current needed and at the rated DC supply voltage. Reversing the voltage on the polarized capacitor will degrade and then damage it. The failure of electrolytic capacitors can be hazardous, resulting in an explosion or fire. Hence it is crucial to detect wrongly oriented polarized capacitor and get it fixed as early as in testing stage.
Types
As to the basic construction principles of electrolytic capacitors, there are three different types: aluminum, tantalum, and niobium capacitors.
