Do I require a Control FPGA firmware upgrade when installing a new MD2 software version?

If the following error message occurs at the initialization of the digitizer, and after installing a new MD2 software version:

"Unable to open instrument

Driver initialization failed

AgMD2: Unexpected response from instrument

CTRL FPGA Firmware: Version check failed

Requires version XXXX actual is XXXX"

You’ll need to update the Control FPGA firmware version on the U5303A. This should solve the initialization issue with the newer MD2 Software. Here below, you’ll find the instructions to update the Control FPGA firmware to the latest version using the AgMD2 Firmware Update Utility.

  • Open a Command Prompt Window: go to Window Start Menu> Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and run the following commands:

cd C:\Program Files\keysight\MD2\Bin

AgMD2UpdateFirmware.exe PXIx::0::0::INSTR ConfigFlashCtrlFpga "C:\Program Files\IVI Foundation\IVI\Drivers\AgMD2\Firmware\U5303ACTRL_DPULX2.mcs"

The “PXIx::0::0::INSTR” resource string must match the resource string as shown in the Connection Expert.
“Firmware update successful” is displayed on the screen once the programming is completed.

  • Shutdown (power cycle) and restart the computer for an update.

Please check the driver release note available on the MD2 Software here.

For additional information on how to update the Control FPGA firmware, please check the U5303A User Manual, section Firmware Upgrade Utility of the Product User Manual.

It is also possible to run the AgMD2Verify tool which checks the version of the Control FPGA firmware; if the version is not up-to-date, the tool will automatically propose to update the firmware using the "Firmware Update Utility", as described in the U5303A Startup Guide.
