Battery LIfe Challenges in IoT Wireless Sensors and the Implication for Test

Application Notes

By 2020, the “Internet of Things” or “IoT” will connect 50 billion devices that can transmit useful data and control information via a sensor network. Although it’s possible for that network to use wired sensors, the wireless variety provides for easier deployment and wider flexibility. Wireless sensor networks will introduce significant changes to monitoring environmental parameters, such as heat, light, and pressure, to support applications from smart power grids, intelligent transportation, and fleet tracking to industrial control and home security. In short, wireless sensor networks will become the key enabling technology for the IoT.

But one factor that currently limits their use is the short time span during which wireless sensors can do their job. If a wireless sensor depends fully on a battery—and the battery is depleted—the sensor becomes worthless.
