Can the line module in my EPM/EPM-P series power meter be replaced at my local Service Center?

This will depend on the model number and the date of manufacture. Prior to October 2002, the line module was riveted to the instrument chassis, making it a difficult part to replace. There were also two areas of risk identified in relation to part replacement:

  1. Metal fragments from the old rivets might not be completely removed.
  2. Electrical earthing might be compromised if the new rivets are not fitted correctly.

As both of these risks could compromise electrical safety, a decision was made to carry out line module repairs at the manufacturing site, thus ensuring the correct tools and manufacturing processes were used.

However, October 2002 saw the introduction of a push-fit line module in the EPM/EPM-P series power meters. Now, should a push-fit line module need to be replaced, this can be carried out at your own location, or at your local service center - electrical safety cannot be easily compromised, as the risks detailed above are both in relation to the removal & fitting of rivets.

In addition, March 2003 saw a change in the EPM/EPM-P support strategy, whereby the instrument chassis can now be purchased as a replaceable part - this chassis also utilises the new push-fit design.

The following summary explains how these changes affect the support of individual model numbers in relation to the line module:

E4418A/19A: Return to manufacturing site.

Models E4418A/19A were discontinued 01-Feb-1999, and every unit shipped has a rivet-fit line module. In addition, the replacement chassis for the EPM is not suitable for the E4418A/19A due to various design differences.

E4418B/19B: Repair at customer site or at an Keysight service center.

Units shipped with a push-fit line module can be easily repaired, using part number E4418-61002. Units shipped with a rivet-fit line module can be repaired using part number E4418-61025 (EPM chassis). Refer to service notes E4418B-13 and E4419B-13 for a description of the chassis replacement procedure.

E4416A/17A: Repair at customer site or at an Keysight service center.

Units shipped with a push-fit line module can be easily repaired, using part number E4418-61002. Units shipped with a rivet-fit line module can be repaired using part number E4416-61004 (EPM-P chassis). Refer to service notes E4416A-05 and E4417A-05 for a description of the chassis replacement procedure.
