Are the Keysight 531xxA and 53200 Series frequency counter inputs floating or grounded?
The counter inputs are not floating -- the BNC shield (shell) is at chassis ground (earth ground).

FAQ 2013-02-07

How do I configure RS-232 for communications on my 53131/32A or 53181A frequency counter?
None of the counters can communicate over RS-232. Frequency counters must use GPIB to communicate with the PC. RS-232 is used for printing only.

FAQ 2013-02-07

Can the options be retrofitted on the 53131A/53132A/53181A and 53200 Series counters?
This table explains which options may be installed and/or require a service center.

FAQ 2013-01-29

FAQs: Migration to New RF & Universal Frequency Counters
Transitioning from the 53131A, 53132A or 53181A to the 53200 Series RF & Universal Frequency Counter/Timers

FAQ 2011-04-18

The specifications for time interval measurements lists a negative value in the results range. Why?
The counter will display a negative result if the end on the 2nd channel slightly precedes the edge on the first channel.

FAQ 2010-10-12

Does the frequency counter come standard with a 10MHz external time base option?
Yes. A standard time base is provided that can be routed to other instruments for synchronization. You may also supply your own external time base as an input to the frequency counter.

FAQ 2010-10-12

How do I rack mount two instruments of different depths?
There are three ways to rack instruments of different depths side-by-side; for example, a Keysight 33220A with a Keysight 34401A.

FAQ 2010-10-12

Why is the fan on the Counter still operating after turning the power off?
This is to keep the internal Time Base (10 MHz oscillator) stable.

FAQ 2010-10-12

Why won't Help (.hlp) files view properly with Windows Vista?
In order to view 32-bit Help (.hlp) files with Windows® Vista, you must download the WinHlp32.exe Help program from the Microsoft web site at

FAQ 2010-10-12

How do you know when the counter has completed a measurement?
One of three methods: reading the register, reading the Status Byte or generating an interrupt.

FAQ 2010-09-15

How do you prevent the counter from hanging up the GPIB bus when no signal is applied?
Set the GPIB timeout value to a sufficient value to complete the measurement.

FAQ 2008-04-22

What are the hysteresis band values for the Keysight 531xxA-Series Counters?
Some of the counter accuracy formulas (see the manual's specifications section) ask for hysteresis band information.
