RF Back to Basics Seminar

Join us for a day of face to face networking with our Keysight experts and others in your field. We’ll provide lunch, product fair and the following technical sessions:

• Understanding the RF Signal Chain
• Network Analysis
• Signal Analysis
• Signal Generation and Modulation
• Accuracy Matters
• RF Simulation

This seminar will improve your understanding of basic RF measurement, design and simulation techniques.

Recent engineering graduates involved in RF and engineers or technicians transitioning to RF will benefit from this seminar. Attendees should have a good understanding of basic electrical engineering principles.

9:00 a.m. - Registration / Refreshments

9:30 a.m. - The RF/Microwave Signal Chain and Network Analysis
This section will introduce the transmit and receive signal chains and important characteristics for design and measurement that will be discussed throughout the day. From there we will segue into network analysis and discuss concepts including transmission line theory, S-parameters, the Smith Chart and impedance measurements/matching. Transmit/receive and directivity paths are described along with techniques for optimizing dynamic range and accuracy. The importance of calibration and error correction is also discussed.

10:45 a.m. - Break and Product Fair

11:00 a.m. - Spectrum Analysis
This section covers swept tuned and FFT receiver techniques and the optimization of spectral search techniques including RBW, VBW and dynamic range criteria for the most accurate measurements. Distortion and noise contributions are described as well.

12:00 p.m. - Lunch and Product Fair

12:45 p.m. - Signal Generation and Modulation Basics
This section will first cover CW signal generation and characteristics, including phase-noise and signal synthesis using VCO’s and Phase-Locked-Loops. From there we will discuss analog and digital modulation generation and measurement techniques.

1:45 p.m. - Accuracy Matters
What do you do with the result after you take a measurement? Often, people compare the result to a specification and make a “Pass” or “Fail” decision to ship or reject the item under test. They don’t teach you in school how accuracy affects the risk of incorrect Pass/Fail decisions. We will.

2:15 p.m. - RF Simulation Basics
This section will illustrate the ADS RF/Microwave Design Simulation Tool and demonstrate S-parameter simulation, impedance matching, tuning, optimization and device modeling. X-parameters are introduced and the integration of S-parameters into test/design is explained.

2:45 p.m. - Wrap up
