Debugging Serial Buses using X-series InfiniiVision Oscilloscopes

Lower-speed serial buses, such as I2C, SPI, RS232, CAN, etc., are pervasive in today’s digital designs. These buses are used for a variety of purposes including on-board chip-to-chip communication, CPU to peripheral control, as well as for remote sensor data transfer and control. Without intelligent oscilloscope serial bus triggering and protocol decode, it can be difficult to debug these buses and correlate data transfers with other mixed-signal interactions in your system using a traditional oscilloscope.

This seminar will first review the basics of some of the more common serial buses utilized on today’s digital designs. We will then discuss and compare the various technologies to decode these buses including software-based versus hardware-based serial bus decoding. We will wrap up this presentation with a discussion on how an oscilloscope’s segmented memory acquisition mode can be used to capture more selective serial bus packets/frames with precise time-tagging over a wider time-span than is possible with conventional Oscilloscope acquisition memory.

Michael Hoffman is a marketing engineer at Keysight Technologies Oscilloscope Products Division. He graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo in the summer of 2012 and has been with Keysight ever since. His passions include golf, biking, traveling, working on new projects around the house, as well as being an avid 49ers football fan.
