Welcome and Opening: High Speed Digital Measurement Insights

High-speed digital (HSD) standards are quickly evolving to keep pace with emerging technologies such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR), and autonomous vehicles.
Each generational change introduces new test challenges for your digital designs.

You need to test your high-speed digital designs across all product development stages — from design and simulation, analysis, debug, and compliance test. During this seminar we can help you to understand how to anticipate fundamental test challenges such as transmitter testing with a high-speed oscilloscope and active probes, jitter and crosstalk analyses and receiver testing using a BERT (Bit Error Ratio Tester). These fundamental skills will help you to accelerate time-to-market of your high-speed computing interfaces, data center connections, and consumer electronics.

Oscilloscope Measurement Fundamentals

In this paper we cover Oscilloscope measurement fundamentals like: Time vs Frequency domain, Sampling Rates & Modes, Bandwidth & Aliasing, Oscilloscope Architectures, Memory depth and Methods, Basic and Advanced Triggering and Waveform Visualization tools.
This will give you the foundation and tips to making accurate & repeatable measurements.

Probing Signals in High-Speed Digital Designs

This paper will present key considerations in probing high speed digital signals such as DDR, MIPI, USB, HDMI etc. We will discuss four important probing topics: Beware of uncontrolled input leads, Probe loading considerations, Probe response corrections and Probing in extreme conditions.

Jitter & Crosstalk Analyses

To characterize high-speed serial buses, jitter measurements are key to determine the quality of the signal being transmitted and provides a quick view of the bit error ratio (BER). The measurement of jitter is a sophisticated process taking into account receiver clock recovery, knowledge of phase locked loops (PLLs), jitter decomposition techniques, effects of crosstalk and waveform statistics in order to produce a fairly accurate jitter decomposition model for the real-world designs. We will review the details and considerations for making advanced jitter measurements to increase your confidence level in your jitter separation results.
Crosstalk is a huge challenge in today's high-speed serial design because it can corrupt the data transmission, closes the eye-opening as well as adding jitter into your design. Crosstalk can come from various aggressor sources such as adjacent high-speed bus, power supply, phase lock loop and reference clock. You will learn how to debug crosstalk issues with a real-time oscilloscope.

Signal & Power Integrity Simulation in HSD Designs

It has become much more important to get higher frequency s-parameters for PCB accurately due to ever increasing data rates. ADS 2020 features a host of new technologies designed to improve accuracy of PCB simulations for both signal and power integrity analysis.

This paper covers a signal integrity pre-layout design flow to optimize high speed datalinks in order to maximize the eye opening as well as a post layout verification flow including two electromagnetic (EM) software solutions for model extraction. In the area of power integrity, the tool can analyze the DC IR drop of the power delivery network, the AC impedance and resonances and helps you to optimize your decoupling capacitors. Finally, thermal and electro-thermal analysis is possible on the whole PCB.

Receiver Test Using a BERT

We will have closer look at what needs to be tested inside a receiver using a Bit Error Rate Tester (BERT), from Bit Error Rate fundamentals to more advanced topics like introducing impairments (stress testing), Receiver Sensitivity Test, Jitter Tolerance Test, Crosstalk Aggressors and making BER measurements.
