Dr. Gang Feng, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Villanova University, is using advanced materials measurement technology to understand concussions, energy storage, and more. Dr. Feng leads the Nano-Bio-Mechanical Characterization Lab  where the focus is on understanding the mechanical behavior of nanomaterials, biomaterials, and biosystems through experimental techniques and theoretical modeling. Characterizing and understanding the mechanical behavior of nanomaterials and how nanostructured composites can be reinforced has exciting potential.

University of Utah Goes to Extremes to Investigate the Characteristics of Polar Ice

Professors Ken Golden and Cynthia Furse and colleagues from the University of Utah are studying sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic Polar Regions to understand what variables should be measured to better understand climate change and determine why ice loss in those regions has been worse than expected. “Just as meteorologists have excellent models for predicting the weather, we need models for predicting how climate is changing,” notes Furse. Professor Golden has been to the Polar Regions seventeen times and is developing mathematical models to predict how sea ice is impacted by global warming.

Telecommunications test-bench serves the needs of both academic research and industry

This academic platform offers advanced scientific equipment for the development of new radio modules and communication systems, up to the millimeter wave range. Well suited for wireless ad hoc or mixed radio-fiber networks for smart objects and sensors towards the Internet of Things, the platform provides a large facility for temporal, frequency or vector analysis, design and characterization of innovative analog or digital communication systems up to 110 GHz. The Telecom Platform targets the generation and analysis of complex signals (UWB, OFDM, CDMA, QAM, etc.) and standards to demonstrate new concepts for wireless communications. These features allow users, as engineers and researchers, to accomplish their technological projects in the field of telecommunications.

Students See the Music at the University of Michigan

Helping non-EE students learn and retain their EE lessons, these unique Lab experiments engage the senses of sight and hearing. In his Labs, students listen to sounds, observe their spectra, and determine their own range of hearing. In the lab, they play notes on instruments and use the Keysight DSOX2012A oscilloscope to measure both the waveforms and the spectra, while listening to these sounds. Students can play their favorite music and observe its waveforms and spectra on the Keysight oscilloscope. These experiments do not replace the “standard” EE measurements but rather add a new dimension to the student learning.

On March 6, the University of Washington’s Department of Electrical Engineering unveiled a new RF and microwave teaching laboratory specifically developed around FieldFox, with its compactness, portability, and all-in-one design. The unveiling was hosted by Dr. Judith Ramey, with Professor Vikram Jandhyala, chair of the University of Washington’s department of electrical engineering, and Dan Dunn, general manager of Keysight’s handheld and low-cost network analysis division, formally dedicating the laboratory to the advancement of RF learning opportunities for students.

California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo is using a “Learn by Doing” approach to providing their students with a host of opportunities to test their classroom knowledge in real-world settings. The Cal Poly Electrical Engineering department lives up to that teaching philosophy every day. “We use a lab-intensive curriculum which, based on an informal survey, offers more hands-on labs than any other EE program I have visited,” states Dr. Dennis Derickson, Electrical Engineering Department Chair.
