The Objective

AKM's objective was to develop the industry best, low-noise process by capturing reliable, high-volume 1/f noise data and using that data to optimize the process.

The Challenge

AKM had been using an in-house 1/f noise measurement system. However, the in-house system needed a complex system gain calibration for each measurement, and the accuracy of the results was not stable. The most important challenge for AKM was to achieve stable and reliable 1/f noise measurements.

The Solution

AKM incorporated the Keysight Technologies 1/f Noise Measurement System into their process.

The Results

The Keysight Technologies 1/f Noise Measurement System was able to automate the system gain calibration and AKM was able to reliably and efficiently measure input and output noise data. Furthermore, and most importantly, the measurement was stable and accurate. AKM was able to reduce their measurement times by 75 to 80% using the Keysight Technologies 1/f Noise Measurement System (a 400% to 500% increase in efficiency).

Another benefit was the reduction of engineering time. In the past, noise measurements had to be performed by expert engineers who knew the in-house system well. However, AKM engineers can now use their valuable time to focus on development work while production operators using the Keysight system can perform the noise measurements accurately and reliably without assistance.

Akira Ishikawa, AKM's Chief Engineer also commented, “1/f noise measurement also has difficulties. We can’t make a perfect 1/f noise measurement just by deploying a good system. Reduction of environment noise is another important challenge and the Keysight system has been designed to work in conjunction with our probing environment.”
