How do I remove the battery from the CPU board on an 8970B, Noise Figure Meter?

The battery should only be removed for one of the following reasons:

  • Dead Battery
  • Memory Clearing

When removing the battery for memory clearing the battery should be removed for 15 minutes or longer. Below are step by step instructions for removing this battery. Make sure you use proper electrostatic discharge precautions as the CPU board contains sensitive components.

  1. Unplug the 8970B from AC power
  2. Place the instrument upside-down on the work surface
  3. Remove the bottom cover using a Torx T-15 driver and a #2 Phillips screwdriver
  4. Lift the processor assembly by loosening the two screws and hinge the CPU board away as shown below

5. Lift the contact clip shown in the lower left corner of the CPU board and slide the battery out
6. After 15 minutes, reinsert the battery with the positive terminal out as shown on the contact clip
7. Reinstall the CPU board and replace the instrument bottom cover
8. Connect the AC power cord and turn on the instrument
9. Instrument memory is cleared if Error E80 appears on the display at turn on
10. It is necessary to re-enter ENR tables for noise sources as needed. Press Store ENR 1 on the instrument
11. Invoke special function 33.1 to perform the I.F. calibration
12. You may now calibrate the 8970B as desired for your next measurement
