Create and Analyze Music and Voice Using VEE

As engineers we tend to explain things in technical way that might confuse those without prior engineering knowledge, especially students. Anyone can understand complex topics if we can relate it with something familiar to them.

This demo is created for teaching oscilloscope and electrical signal for high school students or anyone even for those without engineering knowledge. The demo uses something they already familiar with: sound and music. It relates complex topics with common knowledge to call the attention of people and to get them interested in learning complex concepts.

The concept:

  • The integrated function generator can be used to create different audible tones with different waveforms.
  • A microphone is connected to the oscilloscope so that the user can see the waveform of their voice.
  • The oscilloscope’s measurements capabilities help understand the generated sound signals.
  • The LXI communication allows for a complete experience using the computer and the instrument to teach the concept of sound with images, actual waveform examples and measurements and interaction from the user.

The demo is a great example of:

  • Relationship between science, music and engineering.
  • Elaborate flow charts with basic VEE objects.
  • VEE capabilities of GUI creation.
  • Instrument control transparency and flexibility.
  • Easy file reading/writing/managing.
  • Showcases the function generator option and LXI of the oscilloscope.

Sound, Music and Voice (Ver. 1.0)

This software demonstrates the relationship among electronic signals and sound. It has 3 different stages that will show examples of different aspects of sound in relationship with frequency, amplitude, the human body, music and our voice.

Section 1: Signals, Sound, Frequency and the Human Ear

This part of the demo is to help the user understand the frequency and amplitude concepts of a sine, square or triangular wave. The first approach will be asking them to take a hearing test by listening to frequencies from 60 to 20 kHz. Tips: Try to grab their attention by telling that human start losing hearing capabilities after certain age.

Section 2: Frequency and the Piano Notes

This is to show the relationship between the frequency and the notes. The users can get entertained by playing the piano. It is important for them to look at the oscilloscope to see the frequency measurement. A file reader system allows the users to create songs. The example of these files are Mario (with square wave) and ode to joy songs (instructions in the program).

Section 3: The Notes and the Human Voice

The human voice is the device under test. Users have to follow a golden signal produced by the generator. Then the program will check if they are on pitch. Additionally, users can find out what tessitura (vocal range) they are.

Download the VEE source code and runtime files. Instructions are given on the IP setup screen of the program.
