Tips for Getting the Best Results On Fine Pitch Gullwing Components with Keysight’s 5DX AXI Systems

The following information pertains to:
5DX Automated X-ray Inspection Systems Using Software 8.x or higher.

In some cases, users are tuning the FPGullwing algorithm with ‘Subtype learning’. This approach can make good joints pass, however, it may make bad joints pass also. The key to success with the FPGullwing subtypes, is the Statistical Process Control (SPC) thresholds. If they are set correctly, they will enable high levels of defect detection with a low false call rate.

For software versions 8.x or higher, the default values for FPGullwing are suitable without modification for the majority of FPGullwing subtypes with the exception of nominal solder thickness (NST) and pin length which need to be set-up as described in the ASAP guidelines.

Although subtype learning for FPGullwing is a selection available in the software, it should not be used for FPGullwing devices as it gives bad SPC thresholds. For example, in some cases the heel search thickness could be set to some value like “2.54362” by subtype learning, which is too large and will reduce the coverage for opens.

In certain cases it is necessary to increase either the Heel Search Thickness or Heel Search Distance/Heel Length:

  1. If there is a lot of solder on the pad behind the heel, causing the heel to be located on this solder instead of the heel, then the Heel Search Thickness should be increased by just enough to overcome this issue.
  2. If the heel is unusually long, causing the heel to be located before the peak, then either the Heel Search Distance or Heel Length should be increased by just enough to allow the heel to be reliably located on the heel peak.

If it is necessary to increase either the Heel Search Thickness or Heel Search Distance/Heel Length, then the increase must be kept to a minimum. Increasing either of these more than necessary will reduce the coverage for open joints.

The following is an example which shows if the Heel Search Thickness is not set correctly, it can pass open joints.

Joints in Figure A and Figure B are the same open joint. In Figure A, the Heel Search Thickness parameter is set correctly, which results in a negative open signal for open joints and it will fail the open joint. In Figure B, the Heel Search Threshold parameter is set too large which results in a positive open signal for open joints, and it may pass the open joint.

In summary, do not use ‘subtype learning’ for FPGULLWING, instead, please use the ASAP guideline. The ASAP guidelines for setting up FPGullwing can be found on the TDW or 5DX system online help under “Keysight 5DX Help | Test Development | Setup the Algorithms | FPGullwing Algorithm Overview”.
