New Tools For Optimizing Operating Time of Mobile Wireless Devices

This seminar is for engineers responsible for design validation of next generation digital communications devices including 2.5/3G handsets, Wireless LAN, and Bluetooth® devices. This seminar will explore the challenges associated with measuring battery current consumption on digital communications devices. Each measurement challenge will be described and alternatives for making measurements will be discussed.

First and foremost, to accurately determine battery life requires accurate current sourcing and measurement. Sourcing and measurement challenges include: Sourcing high transient speed current pulses; Emulating battery resistance; Determining the effect of battery resistance on device performance; Making wide dynamic range current measurements.

Once you have the ability to accurately source and measure current, you need to log current over the long term and then analyze this huge quantity of data in a meaningful way. Challenges include: Configuring a system to data log current; Capturing rapid events while collecting hours, days or even weeks worth of data. To conclude, methods for determining battery life, based on various methods of analyzing these long-term current measurements, will be discussed. The Battery Drain Analyzer features of the Keysight 66319B/D and 66321B/D will be discussed as appropriate for this application.
