Use this procedure to produce a 3.5" disk on a PC which can be used to update the Agilent 89441A RF section.

Equipment Requirements

• PC with a 3.5" disk drive that is compatible with high density (1.44 MByte) disks.
• DOS 3.1 or higher

  NOTE: Utilities used in this procedure will not work when running Windows-NT. The PC will need to be rebooted into DOS mode.

• One 3.5" high density disk (1.44 MByte)

Making the 89441A RF Section Firmware Update Disk

1. Download the Agilent 89431 archive file from the web site and place it in a directory on your local PC. (If the directory Agilent89431 already exists on your PC, delete all the files inside that the directory before you download the file.)

   Example: c:\Agilent89431

2. Execute the Agilent 89431 archive program.

   Example: C:\Agilent89431> CF06HP89431FIRM.EXE

3. Label and format the high density 3.5" disk. Label the disk as follows:

   Agilent 89441A RF Section Firmware Update Disk, Rev A.00.04

   Use the DOS "FORMAT" command to format the disk.

   Example: C:\Agilent89400> FORMAT A:

4. Run the MAKEDISK.BAT batch file.

   NOTE: MAKEDISK.BAT will not work when running Windows-NT. Reboot the PC and select DOS mode before running MAKEDISK.BAT.

   • Insert the disk into the disk drive.
   • Run the MAKEDISK.BAT batch file, specifying the disk drive parameter for your 3.5" disk drive.

     Example: C:\Agilent89400> MAKEDISK A:

   The MAKEDISK.BAT batch file converts the DOS formatted disks into Agilent's Logical Interface Format (LIF) and then copies the firmware update files to the disks. The LIF disks are not readable by DOS, but you can view the disk contents with the LIF utility provided in the archive.

5. Check disks.
   • Insert the disk into the disk drive.
   • Use the LIF utility provided in the archive to list the directory of files on the disk.

     Example: C:\Agilent89400> LIF LS A: /L

6. If more than one disk is needed, repeat steps 4 through 6.
7. The disks are now ready to update the Rf section's firmware in the Agilent 89441A.

Installation Procedures

1. Determine if your analyzer needs the firmware update.
   • Set the power switch to ON.
   • After the analyzer finishes its power-up calibration, press the following keys:

     [ System Utility ]
     [ more ]
     [ firmware version ]

   • Compare the Release ID code on the screen to the Rev code on the label of the firmware update disk.
   • If the Revision ID code is the same as or greater than the Rev code on firmware update disk, you do not need to update your firmware.

2. Set the power switch of the IF section to OFF and the power switch of the RF section to ON.

3. Insert the 89441A RF section firmware update disk into the disk drive.
   • Turn the power switch of the IF section to ON.

     Caution!
     Do not interrupt power or remove the update disk from the disk drive while the analyzer is loading.

   • Wait until the analyzer returns to preset.

4. Remove the disk.

5. Set the RF section's power switch to STANDBY and the IF section's power switch to OFF.

   The new firmware for the RF section of the 89441A vector network analyzer is now installed.

6. Power on the analyzer and check for failures.
   • Set the power switch to ON.
   • Check that the power-on tests finish with no failures.

7. If the analyzer does not boot up or the power-on tests fail, contact your nearest Agilent Service Center. Please provide the following information to our service center staff:
   • Model Number: 89441A
   • Serial Number (The serial number label is attached to the rear panel.)
   • Explain that you are having trouble installing an RF section firmware update.
